STERN GALLERY EXHIBITIONS

Between Black and White

The abstinence from colour in a colour-saturated world is very intriguing. In ancient times, drawing was treated with immense respect.

Colour, on the other hand, was regarded as a superfluous decoration. In modern art, the role of colour in art has changed dramatically. No longer is it merely a tool to improve the imitation (mimesis) of reality, but it has become an important tool for expressing the inner world of the artist.

The choice to abstain from colour has introvert qualities and may also hint a protest against the external overflow. The reduction in art creates order in a visually chaotic world. This abstinence has an element of retreat to the basic building blocks, to simplicity.

The lack of colour challenges the spectator to activate a different set of tools that enable a much deeper observation, beyond
the emotional-associative connections of colour. This deep observation contains the richness of reduction.

As in a moonlight trek, thus the viewing of this show – as the eye adjusts to the different light, one reveals the magic and richness of the depth.
