Tobiasse Theo

1927-2012

Tobiasse’s parents fled from Lithuania to Israel in 1925 and it was here that Theo was born. Unfortunately, they could not survive the financial hardships and left Israel to Paris in 1931, where they hid during the second world war. After the war, Theo yearned for sunshine and moved to the south of France, settling in Saint-Paul de Vence. There he began to paint in his unique narrative style, each painting boasting a title that stirs the imagination.
Tobiasse’s paintings are exuberant floods of colour and form ranging from expressionistic to naïve in style.
The legend tells that each painting bears a secret: a personal message in Yiddish, which the Tobiasse glued on to the painting and then covered with paint forever.
