STERN GALLERY ARTIST PORTFOLIO

Krizeh Yehiel

1908-1968

Yehiel Krizeh was born and raised in a Jewish family in the town of Turk in central Poland. He immigrated to Israel with his mother, two brothers and two sisters in 1923. They settled in the source of life in Jerusalem. In his youth he was dealing with weaving , which, according to him, affected his style.

Krizeh studied with Avigdor Steimatzky, and Tamari at Abramovich in Petah Tikva, then was a pupil of Joseph Zaritsky. He was part of the school of "New Horizons" which advocated an abstract painting, and taught at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. In the sixties, he took part in the group exhibitions of "Ten +" movement established by Raffi Lavie, and won the Dizengoff Prize of Art twice.

At first, his style was semi-abstract themes that reflected the pioneering way of life in Israel - especially in urban landscapes of factories and workshops, port and sea landscapes and orchards. Since the 50's his paintings became more abstract, and after a visit to the United States he was influenced by the Expressionism Abstract movement.
